Mary Halvorson is een nieuw fenomeen in de New Yorkse jazzscene. Halvorson is niet alleen in haar eigen trio/quintet actief maar ook als gitarist en co-leader in 21(!) ‘downtown’ bands. Het Jason Moran Trio, Ellery Eskelin Quartet, Marc Ribot's Sun Ship, Trevor Dunn Trio, Anthony Braxton Septet, Elliott Sharp duo, The Thirteenth Assembly (met Jessica Pavone), Myra Melford’s Happy Whistlings, om er maar eens een paar te noemen.
Mary Halvorson brengt trash-rock en freejazz samen. Ze wordt gezien als de troonopvolgster van Marc Ribot. Haar onstuimige drummer Ches Smith is bekend geworden in Ribot’s luidste groep Ceramic Dog. Bassist John Hébert fungeert als steady swingend scharnierpunt in dit trio vol muzikale extremiteiten.
