The revival of Elliott Sharp’s original band that combines punk,
hardcore and heavy metal elements with free jazz, improvisation and classical music. Elliott Sharp's CARBON returns!
Formed in 1983, Carbon is Elliott Sharp's legendary rock band. Inactive
since 1998 Carbonhas recorded a new CD for the Swiss label Intakt during Summer 2009.
This was arguably the most powerful and accessible version of the band and made the
critically-acclaimed and highly popular records "Tocsin," "Amusia," and "Interference." "Amusia" reached
Nr. 3 on Rolling Stone's Alternative Chart and all three records rode high on the CMJ
college radio charts.
E# is presently composing the music for the next Carbon tour and it will
continue to expand the dimensions of electric band music.
Carbon was the first band to mix up punk energy and hardcore sounds with
the worlds of heavy metal, free jazz, contemporary classical music, improvisation, and
non-Western musics such as North African trance and Tibetan ritual. In Carbon, E# also
pioneered the use of the mathematics of chaos and fractals, industrial and urban sounds and
rhythms, and computer processing in a band context. Carbon was one of the first of the
Downtown supergroups, pre-dating The President, Naked City, and Semantics. Carbon had a
longstanding and fruitful collaboration with Bachir Attar, leader of the Master Musicians of
Jahjoukah from Morocco. Passing through the ranks of Carbon have been such great musicians as
Bobby Previte, David Linton, Tony Maimone, Charles K. Noyes, Lesli Dalaba, Samm
Bennett, Rick Brown, and Jonathan Kane.
